Wayne Rooney has thanked Manchester United’s fans for the warm reception he was given on Monday night when he played against Chelsea.
It was the first time that Rooney has started since his summer transfer debacle began and many expected there to be as many boos as cheers at Old Trafford but it wasn’t the case.
Rooney’s name was chanted from the first whistle and it is something he has publicly thanked the fans for on his official Facebook page.
Rooney’s energetic performance was certainly the best we had seen him play in a long time but that is only because of how badly he played in the second half of last season.
He hardly set the world alight against Chelsea but it was great to see some enthusiasm back in his bones whilst still in a United shirt.
Sky Sports this week reported that Rooney would not hand in an official transfer request and it may well have had something to do with the fans reaction. We all know Rooney needs to be loved to play his best football and although he has done plenty for fans to justifiably not want to cheer his name, ‘Rooney, Rooney’ will continue to be sung at Old Trafford so long as he is a United player.
