Shinji Kagawa becomes a worldwide trend after Dortmund campaign to bring him back

Borussia Dortmund fans have taken to Twitter to launch a campaign with the intention of showing their club who they want to re-sign this year – Shinji Kagawa.

The #freeshinji campaign, created by fans, was launched at 19:09 CET in commemoration of the year the club was founded and within minutes, it was trending in Dortmund and Manchester.

Accompanied by a mocked up image of Kagawa behind bars, such was the response for the flash mob campaign it became a worldwide trend by the end of the night.

freeshinjiThe 24-year-old has so far had to settle for a spot on United’s bench as David Moyes has chosen to give other players the opportunity and it is a move that has angered Dortmund fans who still have a big soft spot for Shinji.

While they have no chance of getting him back this year, their intentions are right. Kagawa is a player who deserves to be on the pitch as much as possible. You don’t win three league titles in three years of European football by pure coincidence.

Bryan Robson recently backed the diminutive playmaker to shine this season, a feeling backed up by the optimism amongst the clubs fans in what promises to be a big year for Kagawa.

It is hoped he can establish himself as a regular starter either in his preferred role behind the striker or in an Andres Iniesta-esque position.

Shinji does need to be freed by United – onto the pitch. We saw glimpses of what he can do at points last season and the quicker he gets given a chance to build on that this year, the faster he could become an integral part of Moyes’ side.
