It is reported that Herrera has a release clause of €36 million in his contract and with Athletic Bilbao having no need to sell the midfielder, United would likely have to pay the full amount to start negotiations.
The 24-year-old joined Athletic Bilbao for €8.5 million from Real Zaragoza in 2011 and became an integral part of their team, showcasing his ability when they knocked United out of the Europa League in emphatic fashion in March 2012.
A defensive minded central midfielder, Herrera is a natural tackler who has good distribution and is able to take control of a game but is far from the finished product.
Despite representing Spain at every youth level, Herrera is yet to break into Spain’s senior side given the plethora of talented midfielders that they have and also rejected advances from Barcelona because he wanted to have guaranteed game time, something he would certainly get if he came to Old Trafford.
Herrera isn’t on the same level as Cesc Fabregas but with time ticking on the transfer window, United have to move fast to make sure that at least one talented midfielder is bought to strengthen the squad this summer.
