Roberto Martinez has rubbished reports that Leighton Baines has asked Everton to let him join Manchester United.
The 28-year-old left back has been one of David Moyes’ top targets all summer and Everton have so far rejected two bids for him.
Sam Wallace from The Independent had reported that Baines met with Martinez to negotiate a deal with United but speaking after Everton’s win over Stevenage, Martinez categorically denied any such meeting.
“No, that is not true,” he said.
“You are going to get so many stories in the transfer window.
“That’s why I have said before that the transfer window being open when games are being played is not healthy.”
Baines was an unused substitute in Everton’s stoppage time victory over Stevenage but has been a key feature in their Premier League games and with 32-year-old Evra coming into the twilight of his career, Baines is seen by many as a good replacement but Martinez denies that Baines has actively tried to force the move.
With five days left in the transfer window, there is still plenty of time for Moyes to strike a deal for Baines and there have been fresh rumours suggesting the Scot has submitted a £38 million second bid for Fellaini and Baines.
The imposing Belgian midfielder came off the bench last night and scored the winner for Everton by smartly finishing inside the six yard box. Moyes is a known admirer of the pair and is likely to go back with another offer before the end of the window but whether Everton are willing to sell at any price remains to be seen.
