Marouane Fellaini has been a Manchester United fan ever since our incredible comeback in the UEFA Champions League back in 1999.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, the Belgian admitted it has always been his dream to become a United player because of the way that we secured the trophy.
‘I’ll never forget sitting there at home watching that final all those years ago, and I made my mind up then that United were my team,” he said.
“It wasn’t just the fact that they were European champions, it was the way they did it.
“I was captivated, and it has been a dream ever since that I might one day pull on the jersey and call myself a United player. I have counted myself a United fan all these years, and when the call came, I didn’t have to think twice. In fact, the only thought that crossed my mind was getting it done in time.”
Fellaini completed his move to Old Trafford in a last minute deal on transfer deadline day and the 25-year-old couldn’t sign his contract quick enough when he was given it.
He continued: “The clock was ticking, and when the form was put in front of me, I signed straightaway. I have never signed my name so fast in all my life. Nothing was going to stop me seizing this opportunity. It is true that I sacrificed some money (on my Everton contract), but that didn’t matter. All that counted was getting the deal done and realising my dream.”
Failed bids for Herrera and Khedira on deadline day also showed United’s intent to bring in another midfielder but Fellaini had no intention of ever rejecting David Moyes’ advances.
“All I can say is that if Manchester United come to sign you, it is because they want you,’ he added.
“If you are not worthy of wearing the Manchester United shirt, they will not come for you. David Moyes has always had confidence in me. He knows what I can do, and he made it clear he wants me in his team. That was all I needed to hear.”
He may not have played a minute of football in a United shirt yet but Fellaini is certainly saying all the right things to get the fans on his side ahead of what could be his debut against Crystal Palace on 14 September.
