Welbeck: I want to score more goals playing up front as a striker

by Sam Peoples

Danny Welbeck wants to get more opportunities to play as a striker and has vowed that developing his goalscoring is his main aim this season.

Welbeck will start in England’s World Cup qualifier against Moldova tonight while Cleverley has been dropped from the starting XI that faced Scotland and Carrick will not start either.

For all his excellent round play for Manchester United last year, Welbeck was criticised for his lack of return in front of goal but he has worked on improving that for this year.

“From last season I thought my game was much more consistent,” he said.

“Performance levels were higher than they had been before in previous seasons.

“I really developed playing on the wing last season, learning that position a lot more and this season I really want to score more goals playing up front as a striker.”

Welbeck scored in the last England game where they beat Scotland 3-2 so if he gets the opportunity to get in and around the penalty box today, he will want to try and build on his early season success with another goal.
