Internationals – Brilliant Van Persie the bright spark on a dull night for United players

by Sam Peoples

Robin van Persie had a fantastic night for Holland scoring both their goals to secure qualification for the 2014 Brazil World Cup.

His first goal was a prime example of his wand of a left foot in action as he curled an effort past Andorra’s goalkeeper from outside of the box with consummate ease.

Van Persie has started off the season in fine goalscoring form for both club and country which puts him in great stead ahead of Crystal Palace’s visit to Old Trafford on Saturday.

Jonny Evans came through 90 minutes unscathed as Northern Ireland fell to a shock 3-2 defeat at the hands of Luxembourg.

On a night which saw a totally shambolic display from Michael O’Neill’s side, Evans rarely put a foot wrong. The back four – playing in front of former United goalkeeper Roy Carroll – were horribly exposed by a lack of midfield cover and from the game becoming increasingly stretched as both sides sought to win the game.

Evans contributed defensively but Northern Ireland’s back four appeared to have little cohesion throughout proceedings.

He came close to putting the visitors in front on the hours mark with his header from United graduate Oliver Norwood’s corner going inches wide of the post but couldn’t help Northern Ireland avoid defeat.

Ashley Young played around 30 minutes in Ukraine for England but struggled to have any sort of impact. His first contribution was to float a cross straight to a Ukrainian defender and like the rest of England on the night, he showed zero attacking guile in a drab draw.

Tom Cleverley came on in the 87th minute in England’s mundane 0-0 against Ukraine and had nothing more than a few touches of the ball.

Michael Carrick and Chris Smalling were unused substitutes for England as was Angelo Henriquez for Chile.

Patrice Evra‘s France overcame Belarus in a thrilling 4-2 game and Antonio Valencia is currently in action for Ecuador against Bolivia. Nani will be in action with Portugal later tonight.
