Federico Macheda has joined Championship side Doncaster Rovers on an initial one month loan spell.
The 22-year-old has forever struggled to break into Manchester United’s first team and this is his fourth loan spell away from the club after unsuccessful periods at Sampdoria, QPR and Stuttgart.
The Italian’s contract with United expires at the end of the year and he has already admitted he has no intention of renewing it, so this loan spell is the best bet for him to try and get some game time ahead of his move away from Old Trafford in the summer.
Ever since being thrust into the limelight as a 17-year-old with his stunning goal against Aston Villa, Macheda hasn’t been able to live up to the expectations he set himself and to be fair to him, most 17-year-old’s would suffer the same fate.
It was almost impossible for Macheda to maintain the blistering start he made to his United career and so it proved. It was a case of too much too soon for the youngster.
Macheda has never looked confident enough to make it as a first team United player despite his great goalscoring record with the U21s and although he has the ability to forge a good career in Serie A, he isn’t cut out for the rigours of the Premier League.
Good luck to him with Doncaster. He’ll need to knuckle down and have a successful loan spell if he is to put himself in the shop window as another poor loan may damage his prospects of joining a good club at the end of the season.
