David Moyes has challenged Wayne Rooney to step up another gear for the Manchester derby this weekend.
Against Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday, Rooney had a superb game in what was his best performance in a Manchester United shirt for a long time.
It wasn’t just the brace of goals he scored but his approach to the whole game as he looked hungry for the ball and wanted to get involved at any opportunity, something Moyes wants to see more of this weekend at the Etihad.
“I was really impressed with the work Wayne did in pre-season,” Moyes told reporters at this afternoon’s press conference.
“He is getting the fruits of that. He’s worked hard and is showing everyone exactly what he can do.”
“I think we just go step by step [on possibility of new contract]. If he could score another two goals at the weekend that would be the next step forward. He’s played really well and we want him to maintain that.”
Rooney has got a fantastic scoring record against City and in his current vein of form, he looks like he can score with any opportunity he gets and as he has two years left on his contract, Moyes will be eager for him to sign an extension if he is to remain at the club.
What Rooney has shown in the past few weeks is exactly why everyone winced at the thought of him joining Chelsea. With his spark back, Rooney has seemingly returned to his old, unplayable self and United have reaped the rewards and if we can get Rooney and van Persie firing all cylinders, our strike force will be simply unstoppable.
