David Moyes has confirmed that Robin van Persie has been sidelined with a groin strain and that he may be fit to return against Liverpool on Wednesday.
Van Persie suffered the injury during training this week and won’t play any part in today’s Manchester derby which is a big blow for United, but Danny Welbeck will get the opportunity to play as a central striker with Wayne Rooney.
Speaking about van Persie’s injury, Moyes said: “Robin van Persie has a groin strain. We thought he would be OK but it is nothing serious.
“We thought we had a real opportunity that he may be fit today but he isn’t.
“He has a chance to be back on Wednesday.”
Against Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday, van Persie wasn’t fully fit and his movement was slightly restricted. It is a blow that he won’t feature in the derby because as it was his free-kick that won it last year but it could have been far worse if it was a major injury.
He could return on Wednesday in what will be a big game against Liverpool in the Capital One Cup and the great thing about the United squad is that we have two strikers in Hernandez and Welbeck who are ready to step in when given the opportunity.
