Jesse Lingard scored four goals in a spectacular debut for Birmingham City this weekend in their 4-1 mauling of Sheffield Wednesday and admitted he couldn’t have dreamed of a better debut.
The 2o-year-old scored a first half hat-trick and followed it up with a fourth in the second half. Lingard only joined Birmingham late last week so it was fantastic that he managed to settle so quickly in the Championship.
And speaking after the game, Lingard admitted that he would like to extend his current one month loan deal to the end of the season to ensure that he gets regular football all year round.
“It’s a dream come true,” he said.
“To get four goals and three points on my debut is massive.
“I had a lot of pressure on my shoulders but as soon as the first goal went in I got more confident.
“You can’t beat first-team football, so hopefully they will let me stay for the season.”
Lingard had an ineffective spell at Leicester City last season so it is great to see him hit the ground running on this loan.
Now that his confidence is sky high, Lingard could really make a name for himself in Birmingham and it would be a surprise if United decided not to let him stay for the season, unless David Moyes had first team plans for the youngster.
Lingard could make his second start in a week for Birmingham as they take on Swansea City in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday.
