Moyes: I’m still getting to know all the players

David Moyes has refused to dwell on the derby day defeat from Sunday at this afternoon’s press conference and admitted that he is still getting to know all of his players.

The Scot also indicated that the Capital One Cup tie against Liverpool will be a chance for him to give opportunities to players who have not had much game time this season.

Speaking on the derby, Moyes told reporters: “Well, it’s gone now isn’t it? I can’t do anything about it so we move on and get ready for the next game.

“Yeah, it did [shock me]. But when you’re a football manager for the length of time I have been, you are always going to have shocks. I’ve had lots and I have got no doubt there will be more in the future. That’s the way football is.

“The cup has been a route to giving young players an opportunity. (But) obviously this is a really big tie.”

“To get back on and play again is the best way to do it. You can’t dwell too much on it. We’re looking forward to getting the next game started and hopefully trying to win. I’m still getting to know all the players here and I have got a chance to get to know a few more of them this week and we’ll see what they can do.

“The cup has been a route to giving young players an opportunity. (But) obviously this is a really big tie.”

Moyes has been Manchester United for nearly three months now so he should know his players quite well but with little rotation so far in his Premier League lineups, he is yet to really see what the whole squad has to offer.

As The Peoples Person discussed yesterday, Moyes faces a selection dilemma tomorrow but it sounds like Moyes will put faith in those who haven’t featured as much in the Premier League. It is the right decision for him to make.

After Sunday, United cannot simply regurgitate an ageing 4-4-2 formation that doesn’t play to the strengths of the squad and has to look at different lineups and tactics to find out what works best for United.

Moyes admitted he doesn’t know his squad fully yet and the only way he is going to is by experimenting. The game against Liverpool is the perfect place to start.
