Federico Macheda has had his loan spell with Doncaster Rovers cut short after he suffered a hamstring injury against Leicester City on Saturday.
The 22-year-old had enjoyed a great start with Doncaster having scored three times in his first two appearances for the Championship club but he now has to undergo rehabilitation back at Carrington.
“He came off with a tight hamstring and will be missing for a good few weeks but we are still looking at extending his deal as we hope to have him back soon,” Paul Dickov told Doncaster’s official website.
“We are speaking to Manchester United to do a deal to get him back once he is fit.”
Macheda has had a torrid time when it comes to injuries and loan spells. He had an unproductive loan move with Sampdoria, suffered an injury at Queens Park Rangers and struggled to get any game time with Stuttgart in the Bundesliga last season.
In the summer, Macheda’s contract will have expired and he will be able to leave on a free transfer. United are unlikely to offer him a new contract as his time at the club has never lived up to the hype that his early goal promised.
