Sergi Roberto has responded to rumours linking him with a move to Manchester United in January and stated he has no intention of leaving Barcelona.
The 21-year-old was promoted to the senior squad following the departure of Thiago Alcantara but has only played a total of 16 minutes in three substitute La Liga appearances so far this year, leading to speculation he would be open to a move away.
Despite that, when asked if he has heard about the interest from United involving a move to the club in January, Roberto insisted that he was happy at Barcelona and was where he wanted to be.
Speaking to Catalan broadcasters Esport3, he said: “I have heard the rumour but it is nothing more than that. I want to be at Barcelona and there is nothing to indicate that I want to leave the club.
“I know I need to improve [to get more minutes] but I am not thinking about moving away from the club where I have grown up.”
Barcelona let Thiago join Bayern Munich because Roberto was ready to replace him and it would be highly unlikely that the club would want to let him go too given that Xavi is coming to the end of his tenure.
From United’s persective, given that we failed to lure either Thiago or Cesc Fabregas to Old Trafford this year, it would also be a big surprise if David Moyes tried to sign a third Barcelona midfielder. This move probably won’t go any further than just a rumour.
