‘New Schmeichel’ admits his love for Manchester United after successful trial

Kjetil Haug has revealed that Manchester United are the team closest to his heart after a successful trial with the club.

The 15-year-old visit spent a week with United as well as Manchester City and Everton as he wanted to get a grasp of the English football culture.

Speaking to Norway’s TV2the Norwegian goalkeeper, who has been compared to Peter Schmeichel for his physical style, admitted his trial with United was very special but insisted it wouldn’t affect his decision when he chooses a club in the future.

“It was very special to be on trial at Manchester United since I am supporter myself,” he said.

“Manchester United is in that respect very well received when I decide on my future. But that they are closest to my heart does nothing.

“I talked a lot with Anders Lindegaard. He gave me lots of good advice about a possible transfer. It was very interesting and helpful.

“I’ll be careful not to say too much about the similarities between us, but there are some. I have a physical style to my play as did Schmeichel but there is obviously a long way to go before I get on his level.”

“We also had lunch with several other United players and David Moyes. Moyes sat down next to me. It was very fun.”

At 15, Haug has been touted as one of the most promising young goalkeepers in Europe and being compared to Schmeichel is a testament to that. At 6″2 already at 15, he certainly has the physique.

The big Dane was famous for his vocal, bullish nature and agility between the sticks and is considered by many as the greatest United goalkeeper ever, but Haug was keen to stay grounded amidst the comparisons.

He continued: “It’s strange to be compared with one of the best ever goalkeepers but it is of course great and I am really honoured. He is one of my biggest role models.

“I’ll be careful not to say too much about the similarities between us, but there are some. I have a physical style to my play as did Schmeichel but there is obviously a long way to go before I get on his level.”

Haug is expected to make a decision on what club he wants to join before Christmas and although he says that his love for United wouldn’t effect his decision, he may find it hard to turn us down if we asked him to join.
