Ex-Manchester United defender Henning Berg believes that Adnan Januzaj is very similar to Mesut Ozil in his style of play and that if he can continue to progress, there is no reason why he can’t become as good as the German.
Ozil has been the catalyst for Arsenal’s rise to the top of the Premier League since his £42 million arrival this summer and is no doubt one of the best playmakers in the world.
Januzaj has been thrust into the limelight this week after his match winning full debut against Sunderland and his name has been all over both the English and European press. Earlier this week, his ex-coach said he reminded him of Johan Cruyff and now Berg has drawn Ozil comparisons, high praise indeed.
“He is a fantastic talent,” Berg told talkSPORT.
“Everybody at the club will know about him. He did really well with the reserves last year and you could see he had the potential.
“Now he has come on in the Premier League and to be a match winner and score two goals in his first start is unbelievable.
“He was playing on the pitch with van Persie and Rooney but he was the one to get the goals.
“He reminds me a lot of Mesut Ozil. He is that kind of player, obviously not at that level yet but he is a similar type of player with similar qualities and hopefully he can improve and become a top, top player.
“David Moyes has said he needed four or five top class players. If Januzaj can keep growing, maybe he only needs three or four more.”
While the comparisons may be very early on, there is no reason to suggest that Januzaj will falter under the pressure. So far, he has thrived under any pressure placed on him, it seems to make him a better player.
Januzaj is far from the finished product but it is obvious that he has the ability to blossom into a world class player of similar ilk to Ozil. Both share a natural instinct to thread the final pass and have fantastic balance and poise on the ball, something Januzaj has shown ever since moving to United from Anderlecht.
It may be early in Januzaj’s career but the signs so far indicate that he could become a top player and as Berg says, he could become a central player to David Moyes if United can get him to sign a new long term contract.
Do you think Adnan Januzaj has the ability to become as good as Mesut Ozil?
