EXCLUSIVE: Brazilian’s deal with United not complete as ongoing negotiations continue

After disappearing from the radar for a couple of months, rumours linking Bruno Gomes with a move to Manchester United have once again picked up pace.

Gomes has begun to interact with United fans once again like he has done on so many occasions before, leading to suggestions that he could be announced as United player today.

Speaking to The Peoples Person back in July, his representative Alexis Malavolta from Sport Brazil said that negotiations with United had come to an end and that Gomes’ dream of moving to Old Trafford was over but Alexis has now revealed that Gomes is still waiting on a response from United.

“Sport Brazil’s proposal is awaiting Manchester United’s response because the Reds have a purchase preference on Gomes,” Alexis said.

“There are clubs in Spain and Italy who want Bruno clubs as well as those in Brazil.

“Sport Brazil is analysing these proposals and when we reach an agreement with any club, we have to be well positioned.”

Gomes has not yet agreed to join United but a deal is not dead in the water which is a stark contrast to July which is good news for the talented 17-year-old. Recently, the BBC did a feature on Desportivo and talked about Gomes, so his name is certainly getting around.

But despite his prodigious goalscoring talent, United fans should be sceptical because scoring goals for fun in Brazil doesn’t necessarily correlate to a successful career. Take the example of Keirrison, a 20-year-old who Barcelona bought from Desportivo back in 2009 for €14 million after he scored 86 goals in 152 appearances in Brazil.

He was immediately loaned out to Benfica where he failed to hold a spot in the first team before he joined Fiorentina on a loan deal that was supposed to last for one and a half seasons. It didn’t. His spell was prematurely cut short and Barcelona then immediately loaned him back to Santos and now he plays for Cortiba, the club that Barcelona originally bought him from.

This is not to say that Gomes can be tarred with the same brush, that would be unfair, and he certainly knows how to score goals but it should be taken into account.

Whether he will scoring goals for United remains to be seen and although a deal is not yet completed, there is still a possibility it could happen.
