David Moyes has warned Adnan Januzaj that he must be prepared for the spotlight and everything that comes with it now that he has signed a new five year deal at Manchester United.
Moyes gave Januzaj his first start at Old Trafford and once again, he didn’t disappoint and seemingly thrived on the added pressure instead of being overawed by the occasion.
The 18-year-old was officially named man of the match by the fans for a performance filled with both confidence and ability in equal measure, something Moyes will hope he continues to show whenever he is given an opportunity.
“I’ve told him that the more he’s in the spotlight the more he has to be ready for it,” Moyes said after the result yesterday.
“It’s a great thrill to be able to sign for Manchester United. Since arriving here I have always felt like this was the right club for me. This season has been great for me – going on the pre season tour, making my debut in the Community Shield win at Wembley and then breaking into the team at Sunderland – it’s like a dream. I want to work hard now and establish myself as a Manchester United player.” Adnan Januzaj
“But it was a great pass for the goal. He was part of our best passing movements. He’s worthy of his place and he certainly hasn’t looked out of place.
“Obviously he’s an exceptional talent and he didn’t disappoint today. We’ll try to use him at the right times to get the best out of him.”
It is amazing to think that Januzaj is only 18 given how well he has played so far. He has managed to make himself one of the first names on the team sheet already in such a short space of time.
Pressure can cause some players to fold but Januzaj only seems to play better the more he is under, a hallmark of a great professional and although he will listen to Moyes’ warning, the spotlight is exactly what he wants.
