Luke Shaw is a name who is high on many lists as a potential replacement for Patrice Evra who looks set to leave Manchester United this summer after admitting ‘personal reasons’ had stopped him signing a new contract.
The 18-year-old is highly regarded as the future left back of England and is considered by many as a better alternative to Leighton Baines because he is only coming into his football career, whereas Baines will only have a few more years left at his peak.
Against United on Saturday, Shaw put in an impressive performance that will only serve to improve his stock but if Shaw signing a new five year contract with Southampton during the summer doesn’t deter him from a move to Old Trafford, his love for Chelsea might.
Previously, Shaw admitted that his favourite side was Chelsea and that Ashley Cole was the best player he swapped shirts with when questioned by fans on Twitter.
The fact that he is a Chelsea fan could scupper any potential move to Old Trafford but given that Ryan Bertrand is already waiting in the wings to replace Cole, there may not be room for Shaw at Stamford Bridge if he was to leave Southampton.
Another thing that could stop a move would be his price tag given that it is likely to be upward of £20 million given his age, talent and nationality – but if Moyes was willing to spend around £15 million on a soon to be 29-year-old Baines, then spending slightly more to secure what could be England’s left back for a decade would make sense.
Evra’s admission that ‘personal reasons’ stopped him signing a new contract at United goes some way to explain why David Moyes was relentless in his pursuit of Baines but Shaw may well be a better option for United.
