There’s no hyperbole in this whatsoever. Jonny Evans is the best defender in the world.
Two footed, strong in the tackle, powerful in the air, calm in possession, a great passing range, intelligent positional sense, smart movement and a gorgeous wife – what more do you want from a centre back?
He is the perfect player to replace Rio Ferdinand given his desire to bring the ball out from the back rather than simply kick it down the field and being able to start attacks with a composed pass is the hallmark of the best modern centre backs.
Evans didn’t get a chance in the team at the start of the season due to the partnership of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic being David Moyes’ preferred choice. However, he has been flawless in the last two games against Southampton and Real Sociedad.
He didn’t put a foot wrong against Sociedad. It was the performance of an absolute world class defender and someone who was supremely confident in their own ability.
Our future centre back partnership isn’t decided yet but Evans can’t be overlooked if he plays like this. It is incredible to think that only two years ago, you’d have been disappointed to see Evans’ name on the team sheet give his tendency to make at least one mistake a game but he has matured into an absolutely brilliant defender who Moyes should now be looking at starting every game.
