Moyes admits Zaha has done nothing wrong and explains why he hasn’t used him

David Moyes has reiterated that Wilfried Zaha is in his plans this season but that competition for playing time between Manchester United’s wingers means he is yet to give him an opportunity.

The 20-year-old was not in United’s match day squad for the 3-2 win against Stoke on the weekend and is still to make his competitive debut for the club despite his impressive performances on the pre-season tour.

Fans have called for Moyes to give him a chance and the Scot insisted that he will do it in his due course when he feels the time is right.

“I just don’t think we have had the right opportunity to get him on as much as would have liked,” said Moyes.

“We don’t want to put him in too quickly. We want to make it the right time.

“I’ve said I would look at in January as I wanted to have him here for six months to see how we work.

“I told him we would try to get him minutes but the competition in the wide areas we have with Nani, Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, Adnan Januzaj and even Shinji Kagawa playing off the side means we are as strong there as anywhere.

“It’s not that Wilf has done anything wrong, it’s just that we have big competition and we have to try to make sure he gets some playing time. Unfortunately, we haven’t done that with Wilf and, if it’s still the case in January, we would look at it. But he is very much in my plans and in my thoughts all the time.”

Ashley Young certainly shouldn’t be getting any time ahead of Zaha and the rise of Adnan Januzaj has pushed him back even further which is a real shame given how talented he looked on tour, but it is still only October.

Moyes has obviously thought about letting Zaha leave on loan in January and admitted that if nothing has changed by that point he would consider it.

However, by the sounds of it he has every intention of playing him and Tuesday’s game against Norwich City in the Capital One Cup is the perfect opportunity.
