David de Gea is following in the footsteps of Edwin van der Sar

Javier Hernandez has heaped praise on David De Gea and expressed his belief that he is the best goalkeeper in the world.

The Spaniard, who struggled when he first arrived at Old Trafford from Athletico Madrid in 2011, has been in good form despite United’s difficult start to the season and put in a strong display in the 3-2 victory over Stoke at the weekend.

He has transformed himself over a very short space of time at Old Trafford and speaking to ManUtd.com, Chicharito admitted that De Gea made a real difference on Saturday against Stoke.

“He was wonderful,” he said.

“Like I always say, we are a team and there are no heroes, but in some games there are players who make the difference and David was the one on Saturday.

“He’s a wonderful goalkeeper, for me he’s probably the best one in the world. People don’t like to say that but, for me, he probably is.”

The Mexican even made a comparison to Edwin van der Sar who was one of United’s best ever goalkeepers. His calming presence in goal was always one of United’s greatest assets and Hernandez’s comparison to the big Dutchman is as big a compliment as De Gea can get.

He added: “David and Edwin van der Sar are two of the best goalkeepers I have trained with – wonderful. Same level, same style and David is improving day by day.”

Chicharito, who scored the winning goal against Stoke on Saturday, made the comments following similar praise for United manager David Moyes who also piled the praise on De Gea.

“That’s what the gaffer said to us and we agreed that it was because of him we got the three points,” added Hernandez.

“He made two or three saves after the goals and he was just fantastic.”

With the World Cup in Brazil coming up at the end of the season, De Gea will be hoping to maintain his good form in order to book a place in the Spain squad but for now, he needs to make sure his current form continues as he has become one of United’s most important players.
