The 19-year-old has enjoyed a fine start to his loan spell at Wigan having been a key player in their Europa League success and his positional versatility is what has impressed Coyle so much.
In Europe, he has been mainly used as a lone striker whereas in the Championship, Powell has played more as a central midfielder although at points Coyle has used him as an attacking midfielder as well.
“I know United have a position where they think Wayne is best but in my eyes he can play anywhere such is his football intelligence on the pitch. Nick Powell is like that.”
However, Powell has always put in some powerful displays as an attacking midfielder at Wigan this season and although he admitted he didn’t like playing in the lone striker role, he has done that to great effect on big European nights for Wigan. He is extremely versatile in that respect.
Coyle’s comparison to Rooney is a testament to his natural ability and when a youngster has that in abundance from the start, it puts them in great stead for a long and prosperous career.
Everybody at Wigan has nothing but good things to say about Powell, players and manager included, and he looks to be making the most of his time on loan.
He does have the hallmarks of being a new Rooney in that he already looks like he belongs on the pitch and isn’t phased by any situation. From a United perspective, it is fantastic to see him progress at such a rate and there is definitely space in our squad for him to come into our first team next year if he continues to improve like he has so far.
