Rafael has not been called up by Luiz Felipe Scolari for Brazil’s upcoming friendlies against Chile and Honduras next month.
Scolari has instead chosen to give a space in the squad to 32-year-old Maicon who now plays at Roma.
The 23-year-old has been excluded from Brazil’s national team because of his mistake in the 2012 Olympics final that allowed Mexico to score en route to their gold medal despite the fact that he was so impressive throughout the whole tournament.
He continued that form for the whole of the subsequent Premier League season where he established himself as Manchester United’s first choice right back.
Rafael has earned the right back spot at Old Trafford through hard work and with Brazil, he deserves another chance to prove himself but Scolari has chosen to take Maicon as Roma have only conceded one goal in seven games when he was played.
To be part of Brazil’s team in their home World Cup is something Rafael is desperate to achieve but it looks like his exodus from the national team isn’t going to finish in time.
Here is the squad in full:
Julio Cesar, Victor, Thiago Silva, Dante, David Luiz, Marquinhos, Daniel Alves, Maicon, Marcelo, Maxwell, Lucas Leiva, Hernanes, Luiz Gustavo, Paulinho, Ramires, Oscar; Neymar, Bernard, Hulk, Robinho, Jo
