David Moyes believes that Adnan Januzaj will grow into the No.10 role in the future and that is the position where he will be moulded into over time.
The 18-year-old played the full 90 minutes against Fulham and was a real thorn in their side with his quick passing and intelligent movement causing all sorts of problems for the Cottagers defence.
So far, he has been used as a winger at United but his natural tendency to drift across the front three sees him crop up everywhere and Moyes hailed his versatility after another imressive performance.
“In time, Adnan’s best position will be No.10,” said Moyes.
“But while he’s so young, it is better to introduce him on the left or right.
“He’s a terrific centre-forward as well and so talented that he can play in several positions. The boy’s working really well and, whatever job we give him, he’s so talented that he can handle it.”
In the foreseeable future, Januzaj won’t get a sniff at the No.10 spot. Rooney is rampant and Kagawa is waiting in the wings, so he is best off playing out on the left and floating inside to his favourite spot where Moyes is currently playing him.
Moyes is also keen to make sure that Adnan Januzaj keeps his feet on the ground despite such a blistering start to his senior career at United and said he would adopt similar management methods to those he used with Wayne Rooney at Everton at the start of his career.
He added: “I don’t want to put too much expectation on the boy, which is why I’ll take him out so he doesn’t tire. But he’s got something which I haven’t seen for a long time.
“I’m trying to keep the reins on him. It is a bit like I had with Wayne when he was a young player.
“I remember I used to get a bit of criticism because we played Wayne on the left a couple of times.
“You can’t always get the young players right in and when you do, you try to find the right slots for them.
“It didn’t do Rooney any harm!”
So far, everything Januzaj touches turns to gold. He has seemingly already become a marked man by the opposition who have resorted to fouling him in order to stop him.
Moyes showed his man management skills in helping the resurgence of Rooney and now he is tasked with assisting Adnan’s ascension, something he has done with aplomb so far.
Rooney fired himself into the limelight at a young age and now Januzaj is doing a similar thing but what is different is that the Belgian is already at a major club in European football on a long term deal, he doesn’t have to worry about where his future lies.
In that respect, it will allow him to focus solely on his football and if the start of this season is anything to go by, Januzaj is going to be a central figure for United this year.
