Coyle reveals secret to Powell’s brilliant goalscoring form at Wigan

Owen Coyle has revealed there is a secret ingredient behind Nick Powell‘s goalscoring form at Wigan this season – Irn Bru.

The 19-year-old told Coyle that he would score the winner against Huddersfield at the weekend and stayed true to his word as his goal just after the break proved to be the winner for Wigan that puts them within three points of the play-offs with a game to spare.

Wigan boss Coyle has piled praise on Powell all season and speaking to Wigan’s official website, Coyle joked that it was all down to Irn Bru. He said: “Every day at the training ground he steals my cans of Irn Bru, telling me that with each can he takes he’ll pay me back with a goal!

“To be fair he’s come up trumps on a few occasions so I’ll have to make sure I’ve got plenty in during the season!

“He tried to dummy a ball in a dangerous area and it’s typical of our luck lately that the error led to a goal, heading in off Ryan Shotton’s heel with the initial shot was heading nowhere.

“But at half-time he came to me and said, ‘don’t worry Gaffer, I’ll go and get the winner’ and true to his word that’s what he did. His confidence is high and there’s no doubting his ability, so it was great to see him get what proved to be the winner.”

All Irn Bru jokes aside, Powell’s goalscoring form at Wigan has been fantastic. He has now scored five goals in all competitions including efforts in the Europa League where he has looked just as comfortable as he has in the Championship.

Sir Alex Ferguson doesn’t compare players to Paul Scholes for no reason and Powell has really progressed a long way in a short space of time at Wigan. He was always head and shoulders above the players around him at Under-21s level and his fine form for Wigan indicates that he could be ready for the Premier League very soon.

Next year, there is no doubt that Powell can challenge for a spot in United’s first team given the distinct lack of competition in the squad but his success will only continue if one thing happens – David Moyes will have to make sure he installs an Irn Bru vending machine at Carrington.
