Manchester United failed with a deadline day pursuit of Real Madrid’s Fabio Coentrao because the Spanish club pulled the deal at the last minute but his season so far has not gone to plan at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The 25-year-old has made just four appearances for Madrid this season, playing the full 90 minutes on only two occasions, and ahead of their clash with Juventus this week the fans have made it clear who their first choice left-back is.
A landslide 90% voted in favour of Marcelo starting ahead of Coentrao and MARCA also suggests that the left-back has fallen out of favour with Carlo Ancelotti as he has lost focus because of the failed move to Old Trafford.
All of this suggests that Coentrao would still be interested in the move to Old Trafford if Moyes was to return during January and the reason for Moyes’ pursuit of Coentrao has become obvious as the season has progressed.
Just like with Leighton Baines at Everton, Patrice Evra has operated as a wing back for a lot of this season with our full backs offering real width to the team. In that respect, Coentrao would be a perfect signing as he is extremely comfortable in the attacking sense.
From Madrid’s perspective, Marcelo is the club and fans’ first choice left back and with Evra coming towards the end of his United career, Coentrao could potentially become United’s first choice left back if he made the move, which would allow him to get back to playing regular football.
