Nick Powell (Wigan Athletic) – Wigan were in action twice during the week. Powell, Wigan’s top scorer in Europe, was dropped to the bench as Wigan faced Rubin Kazan in the Europa League.
He was brought on after an hour had been played with the Latics trailing by a goal. He came close to getting the equaliser just ten minutes after coming on. He lost two Kazan defenders with ease but his left-footed shot went wide. Wigan lost the game 1-0. It was their first defeat in the competition and Wigan’s hopes of progressing to the knockout stages remain in their own hands.
Powell also played the full match as Wigan took on Yeovil Town in the Championship. He had a chance after just 13 minutes but his header at goal was parried away by the Yeovil goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey. He had further chances after the break and saw a shot blocked and another go wide in quick succession. Not long after he had a header which went wide past the right post. With seconds left on the clock, Powell got free on the half way line and it was a two on one situation with himself and McArthur pushing forward. Unfortunately, Powell’s final ball was neither a cross nor a shot and the ball went out of play. Wigan won 1-0.
Marnick Vermijl (NEC Nijmegen) – Vermijl played the full game as NEC Nijmegen took on Ajax. Vermijl created the first opportunity for the NEC but Rieks was unable to get on the end of his cross before the ball was collected by Ajax’s keeper. While Vermijl had a generally solid game NEC lost the match 3-0.
