Ex-Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has singled out Ilkay Gundogan as the central midfielder who David Moyes needs to sign in the next transfer window.
The 23-year-old Borussia Dortmund playmaker is considered a very plausible signing by Manchester United fans given that his current deal with Dortmund expires next year and Moyes will be active in the upcoming transfer windows following the failures of this summer.
Speaking on his Twitter account in a Q+A with fans, Meulensteen was asked what midfielder United should sign and responded with Gundogan.
Gundogan has been an essential player for Dortmund since his arrival back in 2011 but so far talks of a contract extension have faltered and it could force Dortmund to sell.
If Gundogan does not want to sign a new deal, Dortmund will have to cash in on him in the summer or let him leave the following year for free in a situation that mirrors Robert Lewandowski’s current one in Germany.
A deep lying playmaker, Gundogan has been widely praised for his ability to combine combative football with a slick passing game and is considered to be one of Europe’s strong midfielders in his position. He was also very close friends with Shinji Kagawa when he was in Dortmund which could potentially help a deal go through to bring him to Old Trafford.
The arrival of Marouane Fellaini brought some strength to the squad but Moyes has made it clear he will be back in the market for another midfielder, so Gundogan may well be on his radar.
