Michael Carrick and Danny Welbeck have both withdrawn from England’s international friendlies against Chile and Germany this week.
It was strange to see Welbeck called up to the squad in the first place given that he hasn’t featured for Manchester United in a few weeks due to an ongoing problem with his knee.
As for Carrick, he revealed that he had been playing through a niggling injury recently and it isn’t a surprise to see him withdraw from the squad either.
They will join Van Persie on the sidelines during the international break and as United play nine games in December, a break before the busy festive period is just what the doctor ordered. Carrick hasn’t been at his best this season so the break should allow him to recuperate and Welbeck needs more time to try to regain his fitness.
When it comes to international friendlies, the fewer United players that feature the better.
