Mats Dæhli has admitted that Adnan Januzaj is a new role model for him following his phenomenal rise into Manchester United’s first team.
Last year, Daehli and Januzaj were team mates in United’s academy but have gone on very separate paths now that Dæhli has returned to Norway with Molde. However, the pair were two of the stand out players in our academy over the past two years.
Speaking to VG.no after his impressive debut for Norway’s senior national side, Daehli hailed Januzaj’s mental approach and hoped it is something that he could replicate
Dæhli: “I’ve been on the look-out for a new role-model after Zidane. He’s [Januzaj] something of a role model for me.”
VG: He seems incredibly unafraid
Dæhli: “He is fantastic mentally. He doesn’t care about what’s around him and that’s clearly something I can pick up from him.”
VG: Is that where you have the most to learn from him?
Dæhli: “He’s firstly much faster and much more developed than me. The mental approach is a thing he has that is interesting, regarding how he thinks football and the way he acts.
“At Old Trafford, he plays in front of 75 000 people, without getting nervous. Then that’s got to be possibly here, too.”
Being held in the same regard as Zidane as a role model is the highest compliment Dæhli could pay to Januzaj and it is a testament to how highly regarded he is already.
Daehli is currently taking Norwegian football by storm. He was named October’s Talent of the Month and the overall Talent of the Year in the Statoil awards and has now made his senior Norway debut aged just 18. Since leaving United, he has progressed rapidly and is shaping up as one of the best young midfielders in Europe.
