Nick Powell endured a frustrating night for Wigan as they succumbed to a late winner last night against SV Zulte Waregem yesterday that leaves their qualification for the Europa League knock-out stages in the balance.
Wigan led from the 7th minute but couldn’t hold on to the lead and their qualification is now out of their hands. The only way they can qualify is if they now beat Maribor and Rubin Kazan beat SV Zulte Waregem,
Like he has on a few occasions in Europe this season, the 19-year-old has been used a lone striker to decent effect but he was powerless to stop SV Zulte Waregem snatching victory from the jaws of a draw.
Wigan had the early lead and knew that victory was enough to secure qualification but they collapsed and are now on the edge of crashing out, so fine were the margins in the group.
For Powell, it would be a crushing blow if he didn’t get to experience knock-out European football because that is one thing where experience will always be a rare commodity for any youngster. As well as Powell missing out, now that Will Keane has moved to Wigan on loan he would also miss out on that opportunity.
Powell really has taken this loan spell at Wigan by the scruff off the neck and has made himself one of Wigan’s most vital players this season. Hopefully Keane can do the same and Wigan can somehow snatch qualification for the Europa League knock-out stage.
