De Gea and Van Persie named in UEFA Team of the Year nominations

by Sam Peoples

David de Gea and Robin van Persie have been rewarded for their hard work in the 2012/13 season with nominations on the short list for the UEFA Team of the Year.

Both players were instrumental in Manchester United’s title winning campaign and absolutely deserve their places on the list.

Going into the start of last season, few expected 23-year-old De Gea to turn around his start at Old Trafford so quickly and emphatically because goalkeepers typically blossom at a later age than most but he has now firmly established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in Europe.

De Gea had a ‘coming of age’ performance in the Santiago Bernabeu on the biggest of stages and transformed his fortunes around through hard work and an unwavering determination. He kept 15 clean sheets in 38 appearances and has been named on the list alongside Thibaut Courtois, Petr Cech and Manuel Neuer. At the time of writing, De Gea has only 7% of the votes so vote now.

As for Van Persie, his place on the list is unquestionable as the 30 goals he contributed in all competitions that season were the backbone of United’s success in the Premier League.

Up against the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, Van Persie is unlikely to get a space in the final XI but vote now for him to help increase his 10% share of the vote so far.

Although we all knew how good Van Persie was, I don’t think anybody expected him to have quite as big an impact as he did in his debut season at the club but you get what you pay for and Van Persie was world class.

Congratulations to both players.
