Borussia Dortmund have admitted that they are unsure whether Ilkay Gundogan will sign an extension with the club amid speculation of a move away.
The 23-year-old midfielder has previously insisted that his dream was to play in England or Spain but a move away didn’t look likely as both himself and Dortmund had repeated that contract discussions would continue after he returned from injury.
Although Dortmund would love Gundogan to sign an extension, whether or not the midfielder will sign one is unknown.
“It is our absolute desire that besides Robert Lewandowski no other regular player leaves the club,” Dortmund’s CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke told Bild.
“Only in the case of Ilkay Gundogan, we do not yet know how it will turn out. We would love to extend (a contract) with him.”
Gundogan has insisted that Dortmund is his first point of call when it comes to contract discussions but with a contract that expires in 2015, he may be tempted away sooner than many expected.
I didn’t feel that Gundogan was a realistic target for David Moyes but Dortmund’s pessimistic approach indicates there is at least a hint of worry in Germany that he may leave.
Of course, Real Madrid have also been heavily linked with a move for Gundogan which could scupper any potential deal for United but he would be guaranteed first team football at Old Trafford, something he couldn’t get in the Santiago Bernabeu.
Dortmund will not want to lose Lewandowski and Gundogan in the same summer but after a host of high profile exits including Nuri Sahin, Shinji Kagawa, Mario Gotze and the soon to be Lewandowski, some through release clauses, there is every possibility that Gundogan could join that list and move to United to link up with best buddy Kagawa again.
Do you think Ilkay Gundogan will leave Borussia Dortmund this year?
