Phil Jones has insisted that although he wants to be a centre back in the future, he doesn’t mind playing in central midfield so long as he is playing for Manchester United.
The 21-year-old put in a dominant man of the match performance against Shakhtar Donetsk that highlighted his credentials as an all-round midfielder and at least until David Moyes brings in some new midfielders, Jones will likely be one of our first choice midfielders.
Speaking to ManUtd.com after the game, he said: “I’ve played in a variety of positions – centre-mid (central midfield), centre-half and right-back – but I’ve always said that I’d like to play at centre-half.
“But if I keep playing in centre-mid, I’m happy to do that.
“As long I’m playing for Manchester United that’s the main thing.”
On and off the pitch, you can see why Jones is touted as a future captain for club and country. Last night, his statistics speak volumes: 84 touches (most on pitch), 92% pass accuracy (59 completed), 2 tackles, 4 interceptions (most on pitch), 2 blocked shots, 3 clearances, 1 shot, 1 goal. Jones gives 110% every game and leaves his blood on the pitch for United. Fans love him for it.
Also, the way he presented himself in the post-match interview was like he belonged in front of the camera speaking on behalf of the team. He said all the right things in the right manner. Jones clearly loves playing for United and that is so important when it comes to a player giving his all for a club.
