Mohammed Salah has been named Switzerland’s Player of the Year after an impressive year for FC Basel and it will no doubt bring more attention to the winger.
Salah has previously admitted that a move to a big European club is something he is looking for in the future and has name-dropped Manchester United as a preferred destination in an attempt to goad interest from the club.
The 21-year-old has steered FC Basel to the top of the table in the Swiss League this year and they are currently undefeated in ten games, although he couldn’t help them reach the knock-out stages of the Champions League as they finished third in their group.
Right now, United’s squad is saturated with wingers who are under performing and there is a real need for new faces. Of course, Wilfried Zaha is already at the club but there is always room for another winger and in his debut season at FC Basel, he outperformed Xherdan Shaqiri who has since been signed by Bayern Munich.
He scored on both occasions against Chelsea in the Champions League this season that showed he can cut it against the bigger teams in Europe and as he is from the Swiss League, he wouldn’t command a high price in comparison to other leagues around Europe.
What Ed Woodward showed in the last transfer window by refusing to pay Herrera’s €36m release clause is that he wants real value in the market, Salah would tick that box.
His first season numbers aren’t staggering but for a 20-year-old in his first season of European football, it was more than admirable and when it comes to bringing out the best in burgeoning talents, there’s no place like Old Trafford.
