Tom Lawrence announced himself on loan at Carlisle United emphatically with a stunning brace in their 4-1 win over Tranmere Rovers this afternoon, which included an unbelievable run and finish that was almost a carbon copy of Ryan Giggs’ memorable goal in 1999.
He scored his first goal after just 38 seconds when he sweetly struck an unstoppable volley from 25 yards out that Tranmere’s goalkeeper had absolutely no chance of stopping.
Lawrence had a couple more chances as the game wore on but what has been described as ‘one of the best goals ever seen’ at Brunton Park by those saw it, Lawrence scored a brilliant solo goal just before the 70th minute mark.
The home crowd were brought to their feet when Lawrence kept the ball at his feet in a mesmerising run that saw step-overs, drag backs and feints before coolly finishing with his right foot.
It really was a carbon copy of Giggs’ goal in 1999 and to make even more spooky, Lawrence is Welsh.
Carlisle boss Graham Kavanagh was effusive in his praise for Lawrence after a brilliant performance on what was his first start for Carlisle.
“I’m told it was brilliant,” he said. “I ran the length of the field when he scored his second.
“It was a fabulous goal by Tom. He has quick feet and an eye for goal and he took it exceptionally well.
Lawrence’s loan runs until the 1 January 2014. It wouldn’t be surprising if he’s caught the eye of a few clubs with this performance and it may be hard for League One Carlisle to hold onto him, although it is in their favour that he is cup-tied in the FA Cup.
