Manchester United defender named best in UEFA Champions League group stage

by Sam Peoples

Jonny Evans has been named as the best defender in the UEFA Champions League group stage according to WhoScored.

The 25-year-old old played in three matches in the group stages, didn’t concede a single goal and scored one himself to help Manchester United go through the group stage undefeated as group winners, and there is little doubt as to who has been the best centre back at United this season.

Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic have both had their purple patches in form but Evans has been the most consistent. For me, he is our stand out first choice centre back when fit.

Moyes has tinkered a lot with his defensive options this year. At the start, he chose the experience of Ferdinand and Vidic to help him through a tough start to the season but now, Evans has earned his place in the side.

He is very much like Ferdinand was in his pomp – a ball playing, aggressive defender with a real eye for a great pass up the field and the more he plays, the better he gets.

Lionel Evans. Jonny Beckenbauer. Paolo Maldevans. Cafuvans. As I said earlier in the season, Evans is the best defender in the world and now he is starting to get the recognition I expected him to this season.
