Moyes must not make Van Persie mistake with Rooney this week

Wayne Rooney missed Manchester United’s Capital One Cup game this week because of a groin injury but David Moyes said there ‘was a chance’ he would be fit in time for the game against West Ham tomorrow.

While not having Rooney would be a real blow given how central he has been when United play well, Moyes has to make sure that he is only put back into action if he is 100% fit.

Robin van Persie injured himself taking a corner against Shakhtar Donetsk and will now be out of action for four weeks because he wasn’t fully fit. It was a situation which was by all accounts avoidable despite United wanting a goal to secure top spot in the UEFA Champions League. The same thing cannot happen with Rooney.

There’s no doubt that Moyes would be tempted to throw Rooney back into action even if he is not 100% fit because of how well he has played but United’s injury list is starting to pile up and we can’t afford to be without Rooney for an extended period of time as well.

In Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez, we have got two strikers who are both hungry for game time so Moyes needs to turn to them instead of rushing Rooney back. It would be better to play without Rooney for one or two fixtures and have him back when fully fit than risk causing an injury that could see him out for a whole lot longer.
