David Moyes has indicated that he could look towards bringing back some of Manchester United’s loaned players if he can’t sign who he wants in January.
He previously said that he ‘wasn’t massively sure’ if United would buy in January simply because of the availability of some players and has now hinted for the first time that the likes of Lingard, Powell and Tunnicliffe could be where a short term solution lies for United.
“We will try in January,” he said.
“We have quite a lot of boys on loan and they are the ones I am making sure we keep eyes on. They are the future. They are part of the club. They have been in the system. We hope they might be able to come back and help in if we need it in January.”
Powell has made 14 consecutive starts for Wigan Athletic, scored eight goals in all competitions and contributed 60% of Wigan’s goals in the Europa League aged just 19. He is a real talent.
There is no question that he is one for the future but is he the right player to come in at a time when United need a new face to make an immediate impact?
He could be the perfect solution. He showed in his first season with United in the Premier League and Champions League that he could cope with the added pressure of senior football and at a time where players may be unavailable, it makes sense for Moyes to look at the likes of Powell or Tunnicliffe and to buy his top targets in the summer instead of buying for the sake of it in January.
Moyes has shown with Januzaj that he is prepared to take a risk with the youth and has given Charni Ekangamene a squad number too, so he could continue that trend by calling Powell back to the first team.
Tunnicliffe has impressed at Ipswich but his mentality isn’t quite ready for the Premier League yet. As for Lingard, he is another player who could have an impact but it is best that he stays out for the season. If we are to call a loaned player back, it should be Powell.
Of course, the ideal situation is that Moyes lands the targets he wants in January but it sounds like that is going to be a very difficult task.
