David Moyes confirms Wayne Rooney absent due to groin injury

by Sam Peoples

David Moyes has confirmed that Wayne Rooney was absent from Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Norwich City today because of a groin injury, but has given the good news that he expects him to be fit to play Tottenham Hotspur on New Years Day.

Rooney was in inspirational form against Hull City three days ago and was involved in all three of United’s goals in some capacity, so it was a real blow that he wasn’t able to play against Norwich.

United lacked creativity without him on the page but managed to grind out a win despite not being at their best and Rooney’s return against Tottenham will certainly be a boost for the team.

“He has an abductor injury to his groin. It’s not serious and I think he’ll be fit for New Year’s Day,” he told MUTV after the match.

“Ideally we’d have given him 2 or 3 weeks to recover completely. But he has been so influential for the team.”

Rooney’s importance to United playing well becomes most apparent in his absence as we saw today and although Tottenham are a wounded animal following their recent upheaval, sometimes that is when a team is most dangerous so we will need Rooney back.

United can make it seven wins in a row with victory at Old Trafford on New Years Day and seeing as Rooney has already scored twice against Spurs this year, he will no doubt be the main threat next week.
