Manchester United have named a strong squad for the Under-19 Mercedes Benz Junior Cup which takes place on January 5/6.
The Reds have taken part in this tournament last year and five members of that squad are included in this year’s 12 man squad.
Here is the squad in full:
Defenders – Liam Grimshaw, Patrick McNair.
Forwards – Sam Byrne, James Wilson.
United have been drawn in Group B alongside Fluminense, Schalke 04 and Borussia Dortmund. They will play their group matches on Sunday 5.
Schalke 04 (14:00)
Borussia Dortmund (16:18)
* Local times (One hour ahead of GMT)
United will then have other fixtures which will depend upon their placing in Group B. They can face the sides from Group A which contain youth teams from VfB Stuttgart, SC Freiburg, Fenerbahce and Grasshopper Club Zurich.
This is a six-a-side tournament. The matches are played on artificial turf pitches surrounded on all sides with one metre high boarding. The corners of the pitches are round as in ice hockey. The matches last 18 minutes.
Live streaming is generally available here.
Last year United’s youngsters took a match or so to adapt to this style but got better as the tournament continued. Hopefully with the experience gained in the UEFA Youth League, they can progress further this year.
