Manchester United make their first move to sign Luke Shaw

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United have contacted Southampton about the possibility of signing Luke Shaw but have been ‘sternly told’ that he is not for sale at any price, according to BBC’s Ben Smith.

At the start of the transfer window, Southampton’s executive chairman Nicola Cortese insisted that they had no intention of selling Shaw and they have stood firm on that stance.

The 18-year-old is widely considered one of the best potential replacements for United’s Patrice Evra who is coming to the end of his career at Old Trafford. After breaking into Southampton’s first team last year, he has gone from strength to strength and is considered England’s long term replacement for Ashley Cole.

A few days ago, I said that United should go all out to try and sign Shaw and it looks like United have put out their feelers to see Southampton’s response. Although they have rejected our first advances, there is every chance that David Moyes could test their resolve with a bid as well.

Aside from Shaw, there are other left options available for Moyes. While another move for Leighton Baines looks off the cards with Roberto Martinez standing firm that he is not for sale at any price, there is a distinct possibility that Real Madrid’s Fabio Coentrao could complete a move to Old Trafford in January.

Who is your preferred left back – Luke Shaw, Leighton Baines or Fabio Coentrao?
