Atletico Madrid’s sporting director Jose Luis Perez Caminero isn’t surprised that Manchester United want to sign Koke but warned United that he will remain an Atletico player for ‘many years’ yet.
David Moyes was in attendance for Atletico’s game against FC Porto where he watched Koke and others from the stands. Since then, he has been touted as United’s top midfield target.
However, Caminero is confident that Koke, who has a contract with Atletico until 2018, will not leave the club and will instead remain there for a good few years.
“I’m not surprised with this subject,” Caminero responded, when asked about United’s interest.
“He is a player who has improved considerably. He has also made it into the Spain squad and that puts you in the spotlight and opens more eyes.
“Koke will be with us for many years. I am convinced.”
Right now, Atletico are tied for first place in La Liga with Barcelona and are five points ahead of Real Madrid so their season has gone fantastically well. In Europe, they also made it to the round of 16 with ease and will now face AC Milan.
Due to their current situation, Koke is unlikely to move to United in January. However, he has a release clause and if David Moyes really wanted to make sign him, he could begin negotiations by paying that release clause.
Of course, Koke could reject a move but it is unlikely that Atletico will be able to challenge for the title in La Liga every year and in terms of his career, a move to a bigger club like United would be the next logical step. Given that Atletico have a history of selling their best players and replacing them, history points towards Koke doing just that at some point.
