Manchester United have offered £20m for Italian midfielder Claudio Marchisio, writes Samuel Stevens of The Independent.
Sir Alex Ferguson was previously known to be a big fan of the Italian midfielder who had been heavily linked with United over the past few seasons. He previously admitted he would be proud if an offer from United came in and also left the door for a move open during the summer but nothing materialised.
The 27-year old, who came through the Old Lady youth system, has only started ten league games this year as Andea Pirlo, Arturo Vidal and Paul Pogba are now all ahead of him in the pecking order. As such, he could be forced to move away in order to secure the regular first team football he needs.
The midfielder has a keen eye for a pass and really knows how to find the net, something United have lacked for years. The Juventus youth product would likely be hesitant to leave his boyhood club given his history with them but he has previously admitted that if he doesn’t have regular football, he would look else.
United have another factor in their favour as the Italian league leaders were knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage. Cashing in on the £20 million offer for Marchisio would wipe out the £17 million loss from not qualifying for the first knock-out round.
The Daily Express also suggest that Juventus are considering the offer and may sacrifice their long-serving midfielder after 187 appearances for the club.
Juventus have also shown an interest in an £18 million bid for winger Nani which could be used as a make-weight in any Marchisio deal. If a deal can be agreed, it would show real intent by United and David Moyes that the midfield problems are going to be sorted as soon as possible.
