Fabio Coentrao had to watch Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Osasuna in the Copa Del Rey from the stands last night as he was left out of their match day squad.
Carlo Ancelotti chose to stick with Marcelo and at a time where Coentrao’s future is up in the air, his exclusion will do nothing but stoke the fire of a potential move to Manchester United.
There is a question about whether Coentrao was match fit but he had posted a picture of himself on Twitter taking part in full training the day before. Of course, match fitness and training fitness are two separate entities altogether but even a spot on the bench would have shown that Ancelotti had every intention of stopping any rumours linking Coentrao with a move away from Madrid. Instead, his exclusion has allowed them to gather yet more pace.
It still isn’t known what Ancelotti wants to do with Coentrao. He may have no intention of selling him at all and is simply making sure he is fully fit before introducting him back into the team, in which case United don’t stand a chance of signing. However, even when he was fit, he played second fiddle to Marcelo.
Alternatively, Ancelotti could simply be playing games in order to drive Coentrao’s price up in order to get the most out of any deal for him.
One stumbling block in a potential deal could be in that if Madrid did want to sell Coentrao, they would likely want to do it on a permanent deal whereas David Moyes may instead prefer a loan deal with a further option to buy. However, with the World Cup coming up, it may be in United’s best interest to offer a permanent deal straight away as the tournament usually drives prices up.
With each passing day, the Coentrao to United rumours gather strength and if he does want to leave in order to get more first team football ahead of the World Cup, it makes sense that United would be place for him to get it given that we tried to sign him in summer.
