Predicted XI: Manchester United vs Swansea City – Januzaj to lead by example

by Tom Newbold

David de Gea – Despite missing out against Swansea last weekend, De Gea is set to start this fixture against the team from Wales.

Rafael – Back fit, Rafael provides an additional threat to Manchester United going forward and will hope to avoid the same fate that awaited his brother against Swansea last weekend.

Chris Smalling – Smalling has arguably been culpable for some of United’s poor defending recently but injuries will probably necessitate he starts on Saturday.

Nemanja Vidic – Ten consecutive appearances and a knock against Sunderland means it is surely time for Jonny Evans to be rested from the starting XI. With injuries to Rio Ferdinand and Phil Jones this would mean Nemanja Vidic will be Smalling’s partner at Old Trafford this weekend.

swansea-home-11-janPatrice Evra – Evra’s rest against Swansea last weekend means the Frenchman is all set for another run of games.

Antonio Valencia – Valencia always looks at his best with the enigmatic Rafael behind him and the two are set to line-up together again on Saturday.

Michael Carrick – United’s top central midfielder is still looking for form after injury and will be hopeful of a good game against Swansea.

Darren Fletcher – Eight consecutive starts for Tom Cleverley appears to have tired out the young midfielder after some encouraging performances in mid-December. Darren Fletcher can be expected to take his place this weekend.

Adnan Januzaj – United’s brightest spark at the minute, Januzaj is one of the first names on the team sheet.

Shinji Kagawa – A slightly more loaded midfield is a good formation to play with when your team is suffering from confidence, hence Kagawa is more likely to sit in front of the two central midfielders on Saturday rather than two strikers.

Danny Welbeck – Despite a disappointing performance midweek, Welbeck is still in better form than his counterpart Javier Hernandez and with the continued absences of star players Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie, Welbeck can be expected to lead the line once again.

Formation: 4-2-3-1

The inclusions of Shinji Kagawa and Adnan Januzaj will potentially make for a fluid, unpredictable attacking line-up. Despite only two starts this season, it could be argued that Darren Fletcher is United’s most in-form midfielder currently and partnering him with Michael Carrick on Saturday could add some steel and drive to a too-oft lightweight midfield.

Finally a second consecutive appearance of United’s two first-choice full-backs should be a bonus when considering Moyes’ full-back-orientated style of play.
