Manchester United fail in their first confirmed attempt to sign a midfielder as Daehli chooses Cardiff

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that Manchester United tried to re-sign Mats Moller Daehli this week using a buy back clause but he rejected a move in order to play under Solskjaer at Cardiff.

It was a surprise when the 18-year-old left United in the summer in search of first team football and it was hoped that he would return in the future.

However, in order to guarantee himself football, he chose to turn down the chance to move back to United right now.

“He had talks with United, they had the option to bring him back as part of the deal with Molde but he has decided to come here and that shows his desire to do well here,” Solskjaer said after Cardiff’s 2-0 loss to West Ham.

Daehli has had a whirlwind six months since leaving United. He won the Norwegian cup with Molde, got his first call-up to the senior Norway side and has now secured a permanent move back to the Premier League. In that respect, Daehli’s decision to leave United has been vindicated and he admitted it was difficult to turn down the opportunity to re-join United.

“Of course it was difficult to say no to Manchester United,” he said. “I had good years there but I wanted to play for this manager. He said he wanted to take me here. I am delighted to sign and I want to help the team.”

Daehli is a fantastic player and was one of the most promising academy talents when he left this summer, so it isn’t a surprise to see him doing so well. He should do very well for Cardiff but had he chosen to move back to United, Daehli could have played a major role this season.

Adnan Januzaj has shown that David Moyes is willing to give youngsters a chance and Daehli would have been given those opportunities because of how unimaginative and poor our midfielders have been this year. However, it wasn’t to be but at least United tried to bring him back.

Daehli could be a magnificent signing by Solskjaer if he fulfils his potential and there is still every chance that he could return to United in the future, especially if Solskjaer joined our coaching staff in some capacity.
