David de Gea may have left Atletico Madrid back in 2011 but there are still banners for the ‘De Gea fanclub’ inside their home stadium, the Vicente Calderon.
The 23-year-old spent his entire career with Atletico from when he was a young boy and they clearly still hold him in high regard even though he left to join Manchester United.
It isn’t a surprise that Atletico’s fans still appreciate De Gea from afar as he did not leave in acrimonious circumstances but what United fans have to be worried about is a potential return to his boyhood club.
Barcelona were always seen as the biggest threat to United in terms of taking De Gea back to his homeland but they look set to sign Borussia Moenchengladbach’s Marc Ter Stegen. However, Atletico is now the more likely threat to De Gea’s long term future at United.
Currently, Atletico have Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois on loan but he is set to discuss his long term future with Chelsea this week and it is unlikely he will be allowed to join Atletico on a permanent deal given how much potential he has.
Of course, United fans are hoping that Courtois does sign permanently because De Gea would more than likely remain a United player for a long time if that happened.
However, if Atletico keep up their current form all year and do lose Courtois, expect serious speculation linking De Gea with a move back to the club where it all began for him.
