United must act decisively or risk losing out on Brazilian after €10m bid from unnamed club rejected

Everton Ribeiro’s agent has confirmed that Cruzeiro rejected a €10 million bid for him from an ‘unnamed club’ this week.

The 24-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to Manchester United after a host of interviews from the player where he insisted United would be a dream move, that he could play anywhere in United’s midfield and that he’d reject a move to Madrid in favour of United – amongst other things.

His agent revealed earlier this week that two Premier League clubs had submitted a bid for Ribeiro and has now confirmed that a €10 million offer has been turned down by the club.

“We did bring a 10million euro offer to Cruzeiro for Everton Ribeiro but we won’t reveal the club in order not to affect the negotiations, after all they are in the middle of their season,” he told Lancenet.

“We presented the offer to Cruzeiro, we talked and we will schedule another meeting within the next days. The club want to keep him and the player also wants to help the club in the Copa Libertadores. We’ll try to merge all the interests.”

Cruzeiro want to hold out for a reported €15 million offer but given that they paid less than €2 million for 40% of his rights, they are simply trying to squeeze as much money out of his sale as possible as their director of football Alexandre Mattos has explained.

He said: “Everton Ribeiro is one of the players that arrived at Cruzeiro with a lot of potential and along with his team-mates, he managed to turn that into reality.

“He achieved individual awards, he is happy but there was no offer to convince the club’s president. An offer from England arrived yesterday and Cruzeiro turned it down immediately.

“Maybe an offer will come that will make Cruzeiro understand it would be a mistake not sell, but the important thing is knowing how to find a replacement of the same level.

Was it United that submitted an offer? Impossible to tell. However, with another Premier League club in the mix there is clearly competition for Ribeiro’s signature.

He has made it abundantly clear that United is the move he wants to make but it is up to Moyes whether he will be ready to take a punt on a player he wouldn’t have scouted much, if at all, but plsayers don’t win the Brazilian League Player of the Year for no reason.

If Moyes does want to add Ribeiro to the squad, then he needs to act decisively or risk another side signing him first.
